Choice of tree

Hello!

Our borettslag is choosing a new tree to plant in the garden.

We want to plant the best native tree for biodiversity, but don't know which one this should be. The tree should also not be too big to avoid blocking people's view who then want to cut it back and damage it.

We are located in Østerås.

Thank you!
David

  • Hi David!

Before I give you any suggestions - how tall do you want the tree to be, or how tall is the maximum height you want?  :-)

  • Hi there! Approx two meters, maybe just above? On some occasions recently people have trimmed the trees and basically killed them because they obstruct 'the view' so we'd love to avoid that.

We basically want something that is good for wildlife and native if possible.

    Thanks for your help!

  • I understand!

I think some kind of flowering tree would fit your needs the best, as it will be beneficial to both pollinators, birds and other animals that might pass by. Apples for example, or a plumtree, are usually not very large trees. You can find several that are around 3 meters max, and they are also fairly easy to keep small with a little trimming now and then.

A Rowan tree (Rogn / Sorbus) is a tree that grows naturally in Norway, and most of Europe, and is both decorative and are also good for our pollinators. We have a variety called 'Sunshine' with yellow berries this year, which is quite decorative. It can grow to 5 meters and might be a bit tall, but kan also be kept smaller quite easily with regular pruning.

If you'd like to avoid any fruits or berries that might need cleaning up if they're not eaten, you can consider a Lilac (Syrin / Syringa) - many have a maximum height of 3 m, while some miniature versions only reach 1-1,5 m. This is more bush than tree, but you can remove the lower branches to create a "crown" if you want. This plant won't get any fruits, but is an important early-bloomer than helps our pollinators during the spring.

I hope that gave you a few tips!
